Jenny was born in a log cabin on Mulberry Creek in what is now Hancock County, though it was Claiborne County when she was born. She married Shadrach D. Ball 8 September 1836 in Claiborne County and moved to Izard County, Arkansas, in 1850. They moved to Linn County, Kansas, just before the Civil War.
After Shade died in 1862, she married John W. Brooks on 20 December 1865. Brooks stole all her money, and they soon divorced. Jane died in the second half of 1880 and is listed in the 1880 Census as "insane".
