John Martin, Pioneer Resident of Box Butte County. Dies Suddenly at His Home in Ravenna, Wednesday a.m.
FUNERAL TO BE HELD SATURDAY
Alliance relatives and a host of friends throughout Box Butte county were greatly shocked yesterday morning to learn of the sudden death of John Martin. which occurred at an early hour at his home at Ravenna. John Martin was born August 16, 1835, in Prussie, Germany, and died June 15, 1911, thus being 75 years, nine months and 29 days of age. Deceased was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in the year 1861 and serving for three years. He was married November 26, 1864, to Miss Elizabeth Talbot ofLaPorte [of La Porte], Ind. [Indiana] To this union five children were born, one son and four daughters. They are E. M. Martin of this city, Mrs. George H. Stevens of Middle Branch, Neb.[Nebraska], Mrs. J. H. Ellis of Havelock, Neb. [Nebraska], Mrs. Pearl Holt of Lincoln, Neb.[Nebraska], Hattie E. Martin, who died in 1903, and Miss Maude Martin of Ravenna, Neb. [Nebraska] Deceased came to Nebraska with his family in the year 1880, locating in Polk county, May 17, 1887, he came to Box Butte county, locating on a homestead five and one-half miles east of where Alliance now stands, remaining there until a few years ago, when he moved to this city. Last fall he moved to Ravenna, where he has since made his home. His wife, the faithful companion of many years, died May 18, 1899. Deceased was a quiet, unobtrusive man, firm in his convictions, and had an exceptionally large circle of friends throughou Box Butte county. The Times joins with any friends in extending sympathy and condolence to the sorrowing children and other relatives.
The remains will be brought to this city tomorrow on the early morning train. Funeral services will be in the afternoon at three o'clock at the Methodist Episcopal church, interment occurring at Greenwood cemetery."
