RICHARD E. JAHNEL

STACYVILLE - Richard E. Jahnel, 79, of Stacyville, died Tuesday (April 20, 1999) at his home in Stacyville, of cancer.

Richard was born Oct. 18, 1919, at New Haven, the son of Edward P. and Caroline (Toelle) Jahnel. After the death of his Mother, when he was 7, he was raised by his Father. He graduated from Osage High School in 1938.

Richard was united in marriage to Mary Catherine Weber on Oct. 23, 1940, at New Haven. She preceded him in death on Nov. 2, 1986.

They operated a livestock and feed business in New Haven until moving to Osage in 1958, when Richard became Mitchell County Deputy Sheriff. He was elected Sheriff in 1964 and served until his retirement in 1984. At that time, Richard and Mary moved to Stacyville.

Richard enjoyed corresponding with people and gathering them together. He spent many hours on his hobby of latch hooking. He looked forward to spending winters at his place in Harlingen, Texas. On Sept. 15, 1998, he married Wilma Behrens Babb. She passed away March 29, 1999.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville, with the Rev. Joseph Schneider officiating. Burial will be in St. Peters Church Cemetery, New Haven.

Visitation will begin after 2:30 p.m. Friday at the church hall in Stacyville, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. scripture service. Visitation will also be for an hour before services on Saturday at the church hall.

Champion Funeral Home, 702 State St., Osage, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard is survived by seven daughters, Dode Westendorf and her husband, Bill, of Waverly, Kathy Stammer and her husband, Norm, of Ellston, Connie Bennett and her husband, Larry, of Prior Lake, Minn., Faye Bodenhamer and her husband, Fred, of Lino Lakes, Minn., Jan Wepler and her husband, Rick, of Prior Lake, Minn., Colleen Jahnel of Roseville, Minn., and Karri Pilgrim and her husband, Jerry, of Honolulu, Hawaii; one stepson, Doug Babb and his wife, Gloria, of Conneaut, Ohio; two brothers, Ken Jahnel and his wife, Bernice, of Farmington, Minn., and Jim Jahnel and his wife, June, of New Haven; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mary, one infant son, and second wife, Wilma.
