Samuel was raised as a Quaker but was disowned from the Friends meetings because he married "out of unity". This is recorded May 7, 1802 in one of the friends meetings minutes in the "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy". He was received back in after his third marriage to Abigail Salmon.
