Linnie became ill with pulmonary tuberculosis. Several months before her death, she entered a sanitarium in Albuquerque, New Mexico for treatment but her condition did not improve. She died in Union Depot in Kansas City. Elmer's sister, Louise, then moved in and cared for his children.
