WALKS IN PATH OF AUTO, DIES IN HOSPITAL
ABRAM BERKEY, AGED CITIZEN IS STRUCK BY MILO JOHNSON'S AUTO NEAR ICE CREAM PLANT.
LEG, SKULL FRACTURED
Abram Berkey, 78, died at 11:15 Saturday night in the Community hospital. where he was admitted at 9: 15, suffering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident a short time before on the Somerset-Johnstown Pike, directly in front of the Walker Ice Cream factory.
Mr. Berkey was struck by a car driven by Milo Johnson, 23, of Edle. Johnson brought his car to a quick stop and placing the injured man in it, took him to the South Center avenue institution.
Examination by Drs. J. Earl Dull and Fred B. Shaffer revealed that the aged man's left leg had been badly crushed, and that he had also sustained a fracture of the skull.
Berkey lapsed into unconsciousness a short time after he was received at the hospital and continued in that condition until a few minutes before he expired, his last words were: "Something came over."
Johnson after delivering the accident victim at the hospital, drove to the sub-station of the State Police and reported. He accompanied Officer Dutra to the scene of the fatality, and explained that the aged man stepped directly in the path of his machine.
Berkey left the ice cream factory only a few minutes before, intending to return to the home of his nephew, Samuel Berkey, near Edi.
Johnson was released by Officer Dutra with the understanding that he would appear at the inquest conducted Sunday afternoon by Deputy Coroner Mrs. Emily K. Fluck. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death.
Abram Berkey was unmarried and had been a member of his nephew, Samuel Berkey's family for many years. He was a brother of the late Levi Berkey, of Somerset.
The body was turned over to Undertaker Charles R. Hauger to prepare for burial. It will be removed to the late home this Monday morning. Funeral Services will be held in the Reformed church at Edie at 2:30 Monday afternoon in charge of the pastor. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
