It is deduced from the records that he died before 14 August 1854 near Stewartsville, DeKalb County, Missouri, as his children petition for partition the sale of his farm on that date (Bk. C, pg. 214, DeKalb Co., Courthouse, Maysville, MO). He married Sarah (Sally) Thornton on 6 May 1805, Madison County, Kentucky, according to the marriage bond he and William Thornton signed. Sarah Thornton, the daughter of William Thornton (1765-1843) and Patsy Owen, was born 1789, Rowan County, North Carolina (1850 U.S. census, DeKalb Co., MO). She apparently died between 11 October 1850 and 14 August 1854 as she was not listed among those receiving her husband's estate. It is assumed both John and Sally were buried in the Thornton Cemetery which was two and a half miles from their farm.
