***

Charles Merle Gutteridge, age 94, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at the Sabine House in Orange, TX, under the care of Hospice with family members and some of his loving caretakers by his side.

He was born on June 20, 1916, to Joe and Mary Ellen (Archer) Gutteridge, at Pittsburg, KS, the youngest of six.

He graduated from Pittsburg High School and went to work for the KCS as an apprentice.

He was trained in Diesel Machinery and worked 20 years helping to keep the engines running.

In 1954, he moved his family to Orange, TX, where Spencer Chemical was building a plastics plant. He worked in Orange for twenty years while Spencer sold to Gulf Oil and then to Chevron.

He was transferred back to Pittsburg to the Jayhawk Plant from which he retired. Never one to be idle, he and his wife, Maxene, enjoyed searching for antiques and clocks. They loved to remodel and redo. Most of all, they loved their families and friends.

After Maxene's death in 2009, he moved back to Texas into an assisted living facility, Sabine House. He enjoyed reconnecting with old friends in Texas and making new friends. He, nevertheless, was homesick for Kansas.

Merle will be remembered by all for his love of pranks and baseball and good cigars. He always had a cheerful word and a helping hand.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Alfred, Earl and Don, his sisters, Hazel and Hildred, his wife of 69 years, Maxene and a granddaughter, Amanda Sue Dickerson.

He is survived by daughters, Sherry Dickerson of Scottsdale, AZ, Kim Moore of Orange, TX, and son-in-law, Ebb Moore, grandchildren, Charley Dickerson and wife Angie of AZ, Lon Kemble Craft, Jr., and wife Marnie of TX, Steve Dickerson and wife, Anne of IL, and Katy Tabone and husband, George of TX, along with Eric Schiefelbein and wife, Sara, great-grandchildren, Amanda Tabone, Madeleine Dickerson, Audrey Dickerson and Kaitlen Schiefelbein and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful employees and residents of Sabine House for making him welcome and at home when he came and for their care and concern in his last weeks. They also wish to thank his many friends in Orange and Pittsburg for the cards and visits and calls.

Services will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Brenner Mortuary, with Father Larry Parker officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Park Cemetery, Pittsburg.
