Alma Baskette of Hamilton County

Alma Louise Baskette, local artist and former Rock City Art Director quietly passed on Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010.

Widow of Frank R. Baskette Jr., and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Mrs. Baskette was an accomplished multi-medium artist with numerous showings and displays throughout the tri-state area. Mrs. Baskette began her professional career with clay. Projects ranged from abstract sculpture to commissioned busts. Mrs. Baskettes later work included pastels, water colors, oils and porcelain paintings. She held both public and private showings. Several of her works were commissioned by some of the tri-state area's private collectors. Commissioned work included portraits, landscapes and detailed porcelain tile displays. In later years, Mrs. Baskette surprised each of her sons and grandchildren with beautiful, life-like pastel portraits. Each portrait was signed with personal notes and framed. She explained the portraits were a personal way for her to show her love and appreciation for her family. She spent over 10 years executing the individual family portraits. While the art director at Rock City, Mrs. Baskette produced the signature displays and figures for the internationally renowned Fairyland Park. Mrs. Baskette always felt it was a high-honor to produce art work that was seen by a world-wide audience visiting the park. She was responsible for sculpting a variety of dwarfs and animals as well as producing the numerous displays throughout the parks caverns.

Mrs. Baskette was born in Ringgold, Ga. She graduated from the original Central High School on Dodds Avenue. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Chattanooga for close to 50 years.

She is survived by her three sons, Micheal R. Baskette, of Chattanooga, Patrick Baskette, of Tampa, Fla., and Brian Baskette of Atlanta; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her sister, Mrs. Toby Graves is a resident of Bolivar, Tenn.

The family will receive friends today, Aug. 18, from 6 - 9 p.m. Services will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 7th and Pine Streets, on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetry.
