Clare J. Dast, 75, of Pigeon, died Thursday morning, Feb. 6, 2003, at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe following a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 10,
1927 in Bay Port, son of the late John W. and M.T. Amanda (Heck) Dast. He was united in marriage to MariAnne M. Neurath on Oct. 8, 1949, at Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. Clare had been employed at Advanced Industries (Pigeon Lumber Company) in Pigeon for 30 years. He was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Berne and had served on several church offices. He was the Winsor Township treasurer for 39 years and a Winsor Township fireman for 34 years. He also was a member of the Pigeon V.F.W. Post No. 2236 where he held various offices. He also was a past member of Pigeon Conservation Club. He was a loving husband and father and deeply loved his Bible class and Christian fellowship. He served in the U.S. Navy
during World War II and was involved in the Bikini Eniwetok nuclear bomb test. He is survived by his wife, MariAnne, of Pigeon; one son, Michael John Dast, Golden, Colorado; two daughters, Jacquelynn M. Edwards and her husband, Daniel, of Bad Axe, Michelle E. Braunschweig and her husband, Richard, of East Troy, Wis.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois M. Dast, of Pigeon; two brothers, Wesley Dast and his wife, Verda, and Donald Dast, all of Pigeon; one brother-in-law, Herbert H. Neurath and his wife, Elaine, of Pigeon; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister-in-law, Verona Dast. The funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Berne. The Rev. James A. Gorsegner will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Military graveside committal services will be conducted at the cemetery following the funeral. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. on
Saturday at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon. He will lie in state from 9 until the time of service on Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or the charity of the donor's choice.
