Dr. Berman Fielder Shieldes

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception for Dr. Berman Fielder Shieldes, 92, of Tyler, under direction of Stewart Family Funeral Home. Monsignor Joseph Strickland, JCL, and the Rev. Joseph Nasser, S.J., will officiate. The Very Rev. Anthony McLaughlin JCD will concelebrate.

Berman was born on Sept. 16, 1917, in Tyler. He was a graduate of Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Schreiner Institute and Tyler High School Class of 1932. Berman was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Air Corps Navigation School at Kelly Field, San Antonio.

He served as a navigator in World War II flying 55 combat missions in the North Africa Theatre. He received an air medal with nine oak leaf clusters, the EAME Campaign Medal with four Bronze Service stars and the American Theatre Campaign Medal.

Dr. Shieldes owned and operated Texas State Optical on the square in downtown Tyler for more than 30 years. He was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Cedars of Lebanon Club and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. Berman was also a charter member of the Tyler Catholic High School/Bishop T.K. Gorman Dad's Club now known as the Booster Club.

He was married to the late Beatrice Zwan Shieldes for 56 years.

Survivors include sons, Dan Shieldes, Tim Shieldes, John Shieldes; daughter, Kathy Shieldes Harry and husband Kent Harry; grandchildren, Stephanie Landrum, Jason Shieldes, Carrie Moore, Ashley Jordan, Greg Harry and Rebecca Harry; sisters-in-law, Shirley Kamel and Rose Zwan; and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers are Dan Shieldes, Tim Shieldes, John Shieldes, Kent Harry, Greg Harry, Jason Shieldes and Chris Moore.

Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Bryan Zwan, Al Zwan, George Naman, Robert Naman, Paul Naman, Michael Kamel, David Kamel and Michael Mahfood.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, at Stewart Family Funeral Home, Old Jacksonville Highway.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. following visitation.

Graveside services will be held in Rose Hill Cemetery following the funeral Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Gregory Cathedral School Scholarship Fund, 500 S. College Ave., Tyler, 75702.
