Joseph first served as a Naval Aviation Cadet from December 11, 1942 through November 19, 1943 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He was transferred to Bainbridge, Maryland on November 19, 1943 where he once again went through training and after his training he became a Seaman Second Class on February 22, 1944.

He was transfered to Pensacola, Florida on February 23, 1944 where he served as a Seaman Second Class and once again became an Aviation Cadet while training to be an Aerial Photographer. He completed his training on July 29, 1944 and was given the rank of Photographer's Mate Third Class.

He entered the Naval Hospital due to illness on August 22, 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida where he was diagnosed with cancer.

In order to be closer to his family he was transfered to the Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, New York on September 24, 1944 where he passed away on September 4, 1945 ..... just two days after WWII had ended.
