Edwin Smith, 88, passed away at the Memorial Hospital in Jefferson City on November 11, 1967 after an illness of about two months. Mr. Smith was a resident of Cole County, but formerly of Osage County, having been born and reared near Bonnots Mill. He was a member of the Bonnots Mill Methodist Church and formerly of the Modern Woodman. Born on December 30, 1878 to Severe and Elizabeth Cordray Smith, (he) is the last surviving member of a family of seven children. They were: Clara Smith, (died 1910); Coral, Mrs. Jude Hubert (died 1907); Henry Smith (died 1937); Willie Smith (died 1958); Joseph Smith (died 1967); and Kathryn, Mrs. Paul Bonnot (died 1948). One sister-in-law still lives, Mrs. Henry Eva Smith, who is 96 years old.
On February 20, 1900, he was united in marriage to Candace Pinet who preceded him in death on February 26, 1934. To this union seven children were born; Nellie, Mrs. A. L. Langendoerfer of New Haven; Elsie, Mrs. Joseph Jacquin of Bonnots Mill; Elizabeth, Mrs. Frank Guest of East Tawas, Michigan; Josie, Mrs. James Waddell of Griffith, Indiana; Dora, Mrs. Horace Adkins (deceased); Arthur Smith of Osage City, and Virginia, Mrs. William Evans of Kansas City, Mo.. Eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren also survive.
Mr. Smith owned a farm in Osage County. His occupations included that of farming and a river pilot on the Osage and Missouri Rivers. At the time of his death, he was a retired river pilot and engineer.
Brief services were conducted at the Morton Chapel in Linn Tuesday morning, November 14, then to the Bonnots Mill Methodist church were services were held with Rev. Glenn Mangam officiating. Interment was in the family lot in the Verdot Cemetery at Bonnots Mill.
Pallbearers who served were: Bobby Jacquin, Glenn Jacquin, Ross Smith, Eddie Adkins, Leo Smith, Billy Evans, Hosard (buster) Smith and Milford Smith
