Samuel was only married 3 years and 9 months when he enlisted in the 48th Infantry Regiment Company A in Union County, NC on 21 Aug 1862. During the months of September and October of 1862 he was hospitalized in Winchester, Va.
He was listed on The Roll of Honor for wounds suffered during the War. He was again admitted to Wayside Hospital or General Hospital #9 in Richmond, Va after being wounded at Bristow Station.
14 October 1863 He was injured in his left thigh and furloughed for 30 days.
On 1 May 1864 he came down with pneumonia and was admitted to C.S.A. Hospital in Farmville, Virginia then sent to General Hospital 20 May 1864.
Samuel and Alcy were parents of thirteen known children, 4 boys and 9 girls.
