United States Federal Judge and State Legislator - He served in the legal profession for over 65 years of his life. He received an LL.B. from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1921 and started a private practice in Memphis, Tennessee. He was a Tennessee state representative from 1925 to 1927, an Assistant State Attorney General of Shelby County, Tennessee from 1927 to 1935, and a Tennessee state senator in 1935. He was also a Referee in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Tennessee from 1935 to 1937, a judge on the City Court of Memphis, Tennessee from 1937 to 1938, and a State Attorney General of Shelby County, Tennessee from 1940 to 1961. He became a Federal Judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee in 1940; he was nominated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 13th, confirmed by the United States Senate on September 18th, and received his commission on September 27th. He served as chief judge from 1961-1966, and he assumed Senior status on August 1, 1966. His judgeship ended on January 9, 1988, as a result of his death.
