Emmett Albert "Pete" Burton
(May 20, 1929 - August 15, 2010)

Emmett Albert "Pete" Burton, 81, of Chetopa, died at 7:45 a.m., Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Landmark Hospital, in Joplin, Missouri, following a brief illness.

He was born May 20, 1929, in Cherokee County, Kansas, to Melvin and Anna (Draeger) Burton.

As a young boy, he grew up in Cherokee County where he attended Cherokee County Grade School and Columbus High School.

In 1952, he moved to Chetopa where he had lived since. He worked for Kraft Foods in Oswego 22 years until its closing in 1969. He then worked for the City of Chetopa Street Department where he served as superintendent for 16 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Chetopa where he served on the Building and Grounds Committee and was head greeter.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, the outdoors, and doing handy-work in his shop.

He and Lydia Marie Corn were married February 12, 1952, in Bentonville, Arkansas. They later divorced.

He and Karen Kay (Barcus) Darnell were married March 16, 1979, in Miami, Oklahoma. She survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: Children – Kerri Burton Joplin, MO Karla (Burton) Littlejohn and husband, Randy Chetopa, KS Marla (Burton) Hart and husband, Roy Dean Chetopa, KS Jan (Darnell) Cooper Bentonville, AR Rob Darnell and wife, Debbie Chetopa, KS Rick Darnell and wife, Patty Chetopa, KS Jon Darnell of the home,Chetopa, KS Grandchildren – Mandy (Littlejohn) Lester and husband, Troy Welch, OK Amy (Hart) Comer and husband, Rick Riverton, KS Jay Littlejohn and wife, Katie Chetopa, KS James Hart Chicago, IL Kaci (Cooper) Jones and husband, Grant Bella Vista, AR Mitch Cooper Bentonville, AR Ryan Darnell, Brett Darnell and Kyle Darnell all of Chetopa, KS Great-Grandchildren – Clayton Lester, Aubrie Lester, Olivia Comer, Graci Jones, Nora Jones and Logan Dale Darnell Sisters – Emma George Pittsburg, KS Irene Porter Little Rock, AR Numerous Nieces and Nephews

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Philip Alan Burton and Richard Ellis Burton; four brothers, Frank, Henry, Carl and Clyde Burton; and one sister, Mary Wilder.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at the First Baptist Church in Chetopa.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at their convenience from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Tuesday, at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Chetopa.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Chetopa.
