Barbara Marie Folds Merrell
(May 23, 1937 - February 7, 2008)

Barbara Marie Merrell, 70, passed into the loving arms of Jesus in the early hours just after midnight on February 7, 2008 at the Brian Center in Brevard, North Carolina.
Marie was a resident of Spartanburg, South Carolina for about 45 years prior to entering the Brian Center last November. She was a native of Carroll County, Georgia, born on May 23, 1937, and the daughter of the late Alviner Raymond Folds and Mary Amanda "Minnie" Crews Folds. Marie was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church on the Bowdon road near where she grew up in the Farmers High Community.

She was a homemaker, loving wife, and mother who had a special fondness for flowers, animals of all kinds, bananas, and ice cream. She faced a multitude of illnesses with great courage and was a source of inspiration to her family. Despite the challenges of her life, she had a remarkable ability to enjoy the present moment and harbored a true innocence of spirit. We will all miss her sweet smile but know she will always be loved.

Marie was preceded into eternal life by her son, Jesse Richard Merrell as well as her sisters and brothers: Imogene Folds Cowart, Raymond Folds, Dera Folds Duncan, Horace Folds, Clifford Folds, Billy Wayne Folds, and Cora Folds Freeman.

Surviving family include Marie's loving husband, Jerry Walker Merrell of Brevard and Spartanburg; her daughter, Janet Lisa Merrell and son-in-law, Alan Paduano of Brevard, North Carolina; sister and brother-in-law, Wynelle Folds Mitchell and Cecil Mitchell of Bowdon; sisters-in-law, Virginia Merrell Kirkpatrick of Norcross, Georgia and Inez Freeman Folds of Carrollton; brother-in-law, Rev. Harold Freeman of Carrollton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with the Rev. Fred Cooke and Larry G. Johnson officiating.
