Capain William Cooley, veteran of the American Revolution, Continental Line.
"William Cooley possessed a robust and vigorous constitution, an enterprising spirit, ans a mind of uncommon stability and perserverance. Gentle in his manner, frank and independent in his character, and for habits of industry and economy in the management of his affairs during his protracted life, no man was more remarkable. ... He built a shop near the house for the shoemaking business, and in process of time he erected shops for a tannery and prosecuted both branches in business in additon to the oversight of an extensive farm. His business was good and with every turn of his hand seemed to be attended with prosperity and wealth flowed in from every quarter. He was a favorite amoung his townsmen, and held the offices of Assessor, Selectman and Representative, and other places of trust, and though of limited education, discharged the various duties to the acceptance of his constituents.
In April, 1776, he was chosen Captain of the Militia Company which was then regared as one of the first offices in the gift of the town. This was in 'times that tried men's souls, being the commencement of the war with Great Britain. Capt. William Cooley went into two campaigns, one at Ticonderoga, the other at White Plains. Age 42 during one of severe winters he took cold which terminated in a permanent, chronic asthma which made him an invalid for life. Though in feeble health, his spirits were unbroken, and his courage unabated.
The last years of his life, being deprived of his sight, her retired from all active business. His was a truly happy and tranquel old age. His last sickness was short. His deathbed was not triumphant, but peaceful. On the 14th April 1825, he departed this life in his ninetieth year. He was a Deacon in the church twenty-seven years.
William and his wife Sarah Mather are buried in Main Road Cemetery with their two daughters named Abigail and their baby son Alexander.
