Bruce attended a one-room school house for grades 1- 8 at Popular Log, in Monroe County, KY. and was a graduate of Tompkinsville High School. He graduated from Western Kentucky University with a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1964. He also did some graduate work at Xavier University in Ohio.
Bruce had a varied career life including farmer, teacher, soldier, pastor, and a church planter. He served during WWII in the Signal Corps in the South Pacific. He taught US Service Veterans farm training in Edmonson County. He taught elementary education in Monroe, Barren, and Boone County, all in Kentucky. In Indiana he taught at Jackson Township in Bartholomew County and Atterbury Job Corps Center.
He also worked for the US Department of Agriculture and Conservation as County Executive Director in Bracken County, KY.
Bruce accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour in 1949 at Popular Log Baptist Church. He was called to preach and was ordained as a Baptist pastor in 1954. He did missionary work in TN, KY, IN, and OH, organizing two churches, Zion Baptist in Grant County and The House of Prayer in Bell County, Kentucky.
