LOCAL BOY KILLED AND DR. EARL LEWIS INJURED

Earl Lewis Suffers Crushed Skull in Auto Crash Near Ferron

Word that Earl Lewis, son of Dr. J. L. Lewis, had been killed, and his uncle Dr. Earl Lewis had been seriously injured in an automobile accident near Ferron reached relatives here about 3:30 Wednesday morning, and immediately Dr. Lewis and Mrs. Ora J. Lewis, wife of Dr. Earl Lewis, left for the scene of the accident. Friends have been anxiously awaiting someone report of improvement in Dr. Lewis condition, but so far there seems to be little change.

The family reports that the body of the boy, Earl, will be taken to Vernal for funeral services and interment.

The Salt Lake Tribune carried the following report of the accident, sent from Price:

Earl Lewis, 16, son of Dr. J. L. Lewis of Richfield, was killed and his uncle, Earl Lewis, 41, also of Richfield is in a serious condition at the Price city hospital as the result of a collision near Ferron, 40 miles from Price, early Wednesday morning, between their car and a dairy truck driven by Ray Cook, 20, of Price.

The impact crushed the skull of the younger Lewis, who was driving, and the uncle suffered a fractured skull and severe injuries. His condition is reported as critical.

According to reports reaching here, the Lewis car sideswiped the truck near the middle of the highway and was knocked off the road. Both autos were badly damaged.

The car was occupied in addition to the boy and his uncle, by a transient, whose name was not learned. They were driving toward Richfield. The truck was headed toward Price.

The Lewis youth was born in Vernal September 23, 1915. He is survived by his father, an optician at Richfield; a sister, Mrs. Helen Wilson; a half-brother, Jas. Lewis, and a half-sister, Barbara Lewis, all of Richfield. His mother died several years ago. He was a student at the Richfield high school.

It is believed the portion of the truck extending out from the body of the machine struck the youth's head. The body was brought to the Wallace mortuary at Price.

Sheriff Jesse Nelson of Emery county announced late Wednesday afternoon that a coroner's jury investigated the accident and reached a verdict of accidental death, as the jurors did not fix any responsibility for the accident. No charges will be filed against Cook, Sheriff Nelson said.
