After an illness of two months, Mrs. Grace H. Leaverton died unexpectedly of complications yesterday afternoon at her home, East Lawrence avenue. Mrs. Leaverton's death followed closely that of her husband, the late George W. Leaverton, who died March 19 last. Mrs. Leaverton's death was a great shock to all her friends, as it was generally considered that her condition as not serious. She will be sincerely mourned by all who knew her.
She was the daughter of William Johnson and Olivia Jeanette Conkling and was born in this city, Sept. 3, 1864, near the site of her home at her death.
She was united in marriage June 18, 1885, to George W. Leaverton. Surviving are two children, Mrs. May J. Malone of Los Angeles, Calif., and W. J. Leaverton of this city; five grandchildren, and a brother, Postmaster William H. Conkling.
Mrs. Leaverton was a devoted member of First Presbyterian church and an ardent worker in patriotic and benevolent societies, being a member of the Illinois Society of Mayflower Descendants; Springfield chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; and Illinois Daughters of 1812. She was also a member of the Illinois Historical society and Hannah Palmer circle of King's Daughters.
Mrs. Leaverton has spent many years in genealogical work and has traced her ancestry back to Stephen Hopkins and his daughter, Constance, who were passengers on the Mayflower, which landed at Plymouth, Mass., Dec. 21, 1620.
