***MY FIRST COUSIN***

Thomas Lamar Vawdrey, 81, passed away at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah on August 11, 2010. As in life, Tom's final hours were filled with the love and support of his family and many valued friends.

Tom, the sixth child of Jehu and Alice Smith Vawdrey, was born at home on October 21, 1928 in Draper, Utah.

As a young boy, Tom's days were filled with mischief and horse-play, chasing through Draper with his brother and pals. He especially enjoyed teasing his older sisters, whom he so adored.

Tom graduated from Jordan High School in 1947. He loved to play fast-pitch softball and spent many hours riding too fast on his prized Indian Motorcycle. Tom proudly served his country in the 47th Engineer Camouflage Battalion in Fort Riley, Kansas and valued the many lifelong friends he made during his service.

In 1956, he met and married his beautiful wife, LaRue Allen. Tom and LaRue were joined for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple.

The early years of their marriage were spent with the Vawdrey Ditch Lining Co., pouring concrete throughout rural Utah, Idaho, and Nevada. Tom loved to share his wonderful memories of those days, travelling with their young families and house trailers in-tow. Working on early Utah roadway construction projects, Tom "moved a lot of dirt" and never lost his love for operating heavy equipment. He also worked for many years as a Golf Course Superintendent at several area golf courses.

He was passionate about his career, took pride in a job well-done and loved to simply ride in a golf cart. Tom especially enjoyed working with young men and women on the golf course and for many he was both a mentor and a friend.

Tom was adored and loved by his children: RuAn, Tami, Thom, Harrison, and Gerilyn, Lori Jo and special son, Marcus Fenton. Tom took great pride in his grandchildren and loved to attend sporting events, dance recitals, and school concerts. He never missed an opportunity to support them and share in their lives. He was also fortunate to be an adopted grandpa to many neighborhood children who were drawn to his quick smile and big heart.

In his last years, Tom treasured time with his great-grandchildren. They loved to read him books and play in grandpa's beautiful yard. Tom will be remembered as a wonderful husband, a devoted dad and grandpa, and a loyal friend, whose quick wit and sense of humor has prompted many smiles and hours of laughter. We love you and miss you so much. Tom was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Tom is survived by his wife, five children, ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and his older brother and wife, Harold and Vonna Vawdrey. Tom is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Edith (Hart), Louise (Burt), Margaret (Floyd) and his Baby Sister; and grandson, Trevor N. Tsosie.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Goff Mortuary, 8090 South State Street (100 East), Midvale. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, August 16, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Sandy Central Stake Center, 1050 East Galena Drive (9800 South) with a viewing prior from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
Interment at the Veteran's Memorial Park.
