"The LaFayette Sun" - November 5, 1902:

Miraculous Escape.

What almost proved a fatal accident occurred last Thursday afternoon at the crossing at Burke's Peak, one mile north of town. The Central train coming down at 2:30 from Roanoke ran into the buggy which contained Mr. James Henderson, of near Wise, who was on his way home and had just driven up on the crossing as the train gave the signal. The horse was killed outright, the buggy completely demolished and Mr. Henderson was hurled several feet, although he was not so badly hurt. He was bruised up considerably and was brought back to town by some friends and was placed under the care of a physician where he is now. It seems miraculous that Mr. Henderson escaped with his life and he certainly is to be congratulated on making so narrow an escape.
