Harvey married Cleo on March 31, 1919

She and Harvey attended church together at Hawhammock, and he asked her to marry him one Sunday morning as they left church.

Together they had five children: Lois Moon Kelly (Vollie Lee), Helen Barbara Moon Middleton (Curtis Troy Middleton), Janet Rachel Moon Cowart (Raymond Cowart), Edith Moon Trantham (William L.), William Jerdan Moon (Alice Flaugh).

Harvey and Cleo separated a number of times, apparently due to Harvey's abusive behavior towards her. They separated for good sometime in 1935. Per their daughter Edith Moon Trantham, Harvey was not a drinker.

Sometime after Cleo and the five children moved back home to her parent's farm, there came the day when Harvey pulled up in front of the house in his old car. His father-in-law William Frank "Pa" Sherrod was sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch as Harvey alighted from the car and headed for the gate to enter the yard.

As Harvey's hand reached for the gate latch Pa quietly said "That's far enough Harvey". Harvey indignantly announced that "I'm here to get my wife and kids!" and again reached out to open the gate.

My great-grandfather Frank Sherrod was a soft-spoken even-tempered man by all accounts. But whenever he did open his mouth, whatever came out was to be taken very seriously.

As grandpa Harvey reached for the gate, Pa was reaching inside the front door for his long gun. I do not believe it was pointed at Harvey – maybe just cradled across his lap. What I am more certain of is that not another word passed between the two men. My mother told me many times that Harvey simply got back in his car and left – and the family never saw him again.

According to his death certificate he died of malarial fever. It lists his occupation as Carpenter.

The informant for the cert was JA Moon of Metter GA. This is likely James A "Gus" Moon, Harvey's brother, Gus gaves a date of birth as 20 May 1898. Gus also lists Harvey as married to Mary Lou Moon. Is this a misidentification of Cleo? Or was Harvey living with someone named Mary Lou? Though Harvey died in a hospital in Winter Park Florida, the cert lists his residence as Metter GA.

Gravesite Details

This marker was placed by his half-brother Charlie Moon long after Harvey's death. I cannot confirm this, but I believe this is not where Harvey is actually buried.
