He was born in Meade County, Kentucky to Sarah Fulton & Jonathan Simmons. He enlisted in the Union Army on March 5, 1864 at Atlanta, Georgia and was mustered into his company on August 15, 1864. He fought in the following battles; Jonesboro (August 31 - September 1, 1864), Lovejoy Station (September 2 - 6, 1864) & Operations against CSA General John B. Hood in North Georgia & North Alabama (October 1 - 26, 1864). The regiment was mustered out on December 14, 1865 at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
In 1866, he crossed the plains to California, settling in Colusa on a farm on the east side of the Sacramento River. He married Elizabeth Frances Nolin on May 9, 1875 in Colusa and they had nine children; James Simmons, Samuel Simmons, Richard Simmons, Mrs. Elmer Annand, Mrs. Joseph Boggs, Mrs. R. Reynolds, Mrs. Henry Beckley, Mrs. Frank Beckley & Miss Grace Simmons. He was a highly esteemed man and citizen. He passed away at the age of 76 years and is buried in the Colusa Community Cemetery.
