He enlisted on January 1, 1862, at Camp Hampton, Columbia, SC, and served in Company H of the 18th SC Regiment for nearly three years. During this service he was often sick and absent in a hospital. On November 19, 1864, he transferred to the 11th Regiment of NC Troops. He was captured early on April 2, 1865, during Lee's final battle in the defense of Petersburg, VA. He was take to Point Lookout Prison, MD, where he was paroled on April 25, 1865. He died of an infection of his lungs on April 29, 1865, before he could leave for home. His name is listed on the memorial in the cemetery there.
