Orestes and Emma Warner farmed and lived in Wheatfield Township, Ingham, MI.

"As a youth during the Civil War, Orestes was fervently patriotic. His three oldest brothers, George Edward, Calvin Franklin, and Charles Adelbert were all in that conflict--but he was limited to "pretend". He recruited the neighboring youth and drilled them in martial arts. He was called Colonel due to this activity. In later years he was called "Uncle Kern" by younger relatives. Indeed it was only by his genealogical research that this writer (Russell L. Warner) learned his real name."
