Mr. W.W. Rankin, one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of the Hickory Grove section, died at his home near here at two o'clock Monday morning, aged 76 years. Mrs. Rankin was a Confederate veteran and was said to be one of the best soldiers in General Lee's army. His death was not unexpected as he had been in declining health for some years and for the past two weeks had been in a very serious condition.

Mr. Rankin spent his life in the Hickory Grove community as a quiet farmer, a man of genuine modesty and great piety. He had served as a deacon in the Hickory Grove Baptist church for more than forty years and was considered by every one to be the best man in the entire community. His funeral will take place at Hickory Grove this afternoon at four o'clock, and will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. W.B. McClure, assisted by Rev. C.A. Caldwell, of McAdenville and Rev. G.P. Abernethy of Gastonia. The body will be interred in the family plot in the church yard.

Mr. Rankin is survived by his wife and nine children, as follows: Mrs. Isadore Jenkins, Messrs. J.W., J.L., H.P., T.W., and James Rankin of McAdenville, Mrs. W.W. Rimmer of Lincolnton, and Mrs. J.F. Lee and Mrs. T.A. Rhyne of the Hickory Grove section. There also survive a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
