Joel Hearne enlisted at age 21 on 27 May 1861 in the unit that would become Company C, 23rd North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal on 14 Nov 1862. Corporal Hearne was wounded and Captured at Gettysburg, PA on 1 July 1863. He was held at Davids Island, NY until paroled and transferred on 8 Sep 1863 to City Point, VA for exchange. He was retired to the Invalid Corps on 27 April 1864 for disability.
