A native of Germany. John had left his native country during the struggle for independence between England and the new colonies formed in America, in which he took an active part. He was a man of considerable ability and intelligence; his parents had set him aside for the church, but having a mind of his own he choose his own career. After the war was over he settled at Mauch Chunk, Pennsylvania.
