History - Lauritz Ferdinand Jorgensen (generally known as Lars F. Johnson), a son of Hans Jorgensen and Marie Dorothy Brink, was born 21 November 1858 at Frederiksborg, Denmark. His mother was the first to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was baptized 17 August 1861. His father was baptized 20 November 1861. In 1868 they immigrated to Utah and arrived in Bear River City in the late summer of 1868.
As a boy and young man he worked on the ranches of George Montgomery, L. C. Lee, James Faust, and later a foreman for the Promontory Stock Company. With each of these employers he stood in the highest esteem because of his honesty and absolute dependability.
Despite his associations with the rough men of the west in the days of the saloon, he maintained a character untarnished made possible only by the possession of a noble conscience and resolute nature. In spite of his environments he never touched liquor and never indulged in profane language. He was a skilled rider of the worst of the range horses. He was known as the most humane master. The writer had known and associated with Lars F. Johnson since 1890 and never once saw or heard him lose his temper or self control.
In 1891 he left for a mission to Denmark while there, he acted as president of the Aalborg conference. He returned in 1893. In 1894 he was elected and served two terms as County Commissioner.
In the fall of 1893 he was married to Johanne Thomsen and to them were born the following children: Edward L., Norman M., LeRue H., Edna V., Irma Marie and Raymond. Raymond died when 5 months old.
Lars also served as a member of the Box Elder Stake Board YMMIA and in the High Council as an alternate.
Following the death of Bishop Carl Jensen. Lars was chosen as Bishop of the Bear River City Ward. He was set apart on 21 January 1900 and acted in that capacity until 15 March 1915. As a bishop, he was loved by the people of Bear River City, due to his untiring efforts in their behalf and in the upbuilding of the community of which the amusement hall and the city culinary water system are the fruits of some of his labors. His nature was one of consideration and concern for others and he would often give financially beyond his means to help a worthy cause.
He lived a true Christan life and his advice was freely sought even to the day of his death and freely given. In his ministry unto the sick he was sympathetic and comforting and was often sought.
He died 30 July 1924. May the memory of Bishop Lars F. Johnson long live in the hearts of the people of Bear River City. - Frede F. Petersen
