Earl was the youngest of seven children. He joined the army in 1935 at the age of seventeen, lying about his age, preferring a life in the military to one on the farm. He served his country both in World War II and the Korean War as a finance officer making sure the troops got paid. Earl reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Earl followed his military service with a stint in the civil service working in procurement.

In 1945, he married Elva Thomas Fleming. They raised two children Gail and Gerald. The early years of their marriage included time in Africa with the military and then back to Salt Lake, where they spent most of their time together.

Earl and Elva began their retirement in 1980 with the purchase of a motor home unfortunately Elva died unexpectedly of a heart attack on their very first trip. Earl remarried in 1983 to Pauline Walker. Earl and Pauline made Yuma their home, where they spent their time on the golf course and entertaining their grandchildren. Pauline died in 1998.

Earl continued living in Yuma and golfing into his nineties. He was a fierce competitor on the golf course and scored seven holes in ones during his life. He will be missed by his many friends and family.
