At the time of his death, he was "a prominent farmer" living east of Old Bethel Road in Stevenson Township, Marion County, Illinois.
Alex Payne died of pneumonia on 17 December 1919 at the age of 60 years, 10 months and 29 days. His illness was complicated by a chest injury that he had sustained several years earlier from being kicked by a horse.
