Joseph Ballenger Bond, Sr. was the son of Nathan Bond, Sr., and Elizabeth Ballenger (or Ballinger). Joseph was evidently named for his grandfather, Rev. Joseph Ballinger. His siblings were Nathan Bond, Jr., Richard Cox Bond, and Mary Walker Bond Hilley.
Joseph grew up in Amherst Co., Virginia, and there is evidence that he was a Revolutionary War soldier. The pension application of John Cash from Amherst Co. mentions Joseph Bond as a "fellow soldier," and a Joseph Bond did serve in the 1st Light Dragoons from Virginia, but that is all that is written. Joseph was however listed in the Public Service Claims Records as a furnisher of wheat for the Amherst Co. militia.
Joseph's father deeded him about 150 acres of land in Amherst Co. in 1782, which he owned until 1790. That year, he sold his land, and he moved his family to Elbert Co., Georgia, where he eventually owned land by Beaverdam Creek. By 1805, he was living in Franklin Co., Georgia, and there he owned land on the Broad River.
In the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery, Joseph drew Lot 383, Dist. 7 of Gwinnett Co., which was granted to him on November 18, 1821. It was land bounded by the Chattahoochee River. After he and his family moved there, one thing Joseph did was to own and operate a ferry across the Chattahoochee at the point where Baldridge Creek enters from the Forsyth Co. side of the river.
Joseph and his wife Jane (maiden name unknown) were married about the year 1778. They had the following eleven children:
