When Rev Edward John Coates was born on April 17, 1838, in Chatham, Georgia, his father, John, was 35 and his mother, Priscilla, was 31. His obituary definitely states that he was born in Laurens County as does his son's death certificate. He married Martha J. Hughes on August 22, 1859, in Laurens, Georgia. They had eight children in 17 years. He died on February 23, 1897, in Macon, Georgia, at the age of 58, and was buried there at Riverside Cemetery.
Reverend Coates served as Captain of Company A in the 22nd States Guards Battalion. He graduated from Mercer at Penfield in 1858. He read Law before becoming a Baptist Minister, ordained at Richland Baptist Church in Twiggs County.
