BRIGHAM CITY - Earl Ferguson, well-known football coach who led six Box Elder High School teams to state championships during his 39-year career, died Thursday in a Yuma, Ariz. hospital of natural causes at the age of 76.
Mrs. Ferguson was born Feb. 28, 1895, in South Cottonwood, Utah, a son of Isaac and Mary Jane Green Ferguson. He was married to Grace Sharp on Aug. 1, 1922, in Midvale. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
He was reared and educated in Sandy, graduating from Jordan High School. he was a graduate of the University of Utah in 1921 and awarded most outstanding athlete honors. He coached football, basketball, track and swimming at Box Elder High School from 1921 until hi retirement in 1960.
In 1960 he was awarded the National High School Coach of the Year. He was a former president of the Utah Coaches Assn., former member of the Brigham City Lions club and the Box Elder Teachers Glee Club. He served in the Army air Force during World War I. At the time of his death he was a member of Brigham City American Legion Post No. 10. He was a member of the 4th Ward Elders quorum.
Surviving are his widow, of Brigham City; two sons and a daughter; Warren Ferguson, Bountiful; Gary Ferguson, Brigham City; Dr. G. Renee Iticovi, New York City, N.Y., five grandchildren; a brother, George Ferguson, Murray.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 12 noon in the 4th LDS Ward chapel in Brigham City, with Bishop Grant Thompson presiding. Friends may view the body at Blaine Olsen Funeral Chapel, 2nd N. and Main, Brigham City, Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and may meet with the family Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to services.
Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
