Edwin Summers Truesdell, 74, for 60 years a resident of Binghamton and since 1923 president of Newell & Truesdell Co., wholesale grocers, died this morning at 5:45 o'clock at his home, 66 Lincoln avenue. He had been for many years a familiar figure in downtown business, backing and commercial circles. He had served as a director of the First National Bank of Binghamton and the Binghamton Gas Works, had been president of the Central Y. M. C. A. and first vice president of the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce and former president of the Binghamton Public Library board of trustees. Mr. Truesdell was born at Franklin Forks, Pa., March 25, 1865. son of Rollin B. and Janette J. (Summers) Truesdell. His education public school and later at Binghamton Central High school. His business career began here in the employment of Marks & Clark, wholesale grocers, as billing clerk. He later went on the road as firm salesman. Then he became a partner in the firms of McTighe & Truesdell and McTighe. Truesdell and Davidge, In 1904, he formed a partnership with Frank B. Newell under the name of Newell & Truesdell and in 1912, the business was incorporated. They erected the building in Lewis street. Mr. Truesdell, with long wholesale grocery experience, was from the beginning business head of the concern, and upon retirement of Mr. Newell from its presidency in 1923 Mr. Truesdell succeeded him in that office. Mr. Truesdell was for years a director in the First National bank of Binghamton, and also in the Binghamton Gas Works, and at one time president of the New York State Wholesale Grocers association. He was prominent during the World War in district food and fuel administration service. He was for 20 years until 1930 first vice president of the Binghamton Chamber of Commerce. He resigned in 1930 with testimonial dinner from the membership, and was elected honorary life vice president. Long an active member of the Central Y. M. C. A. he served that organization as president during 1918-19. He had been until lately a member of the Binghamton Club and the Binghamton Country Club. On May 28 1890, he married Aline May Root, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles O. Root. Binghamton, who died Sept 5 1898. On June 11, 1903, he married Lillian Root Race, also a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Root, who died Aug. 14, 1938. He is survived by one daughter, Edith Root Truesdell, Binghamton; two sons, Edwin S. Truesdell Jr., and Robert D. Truesdell, both of Binghamton: two grandchildren: William M. Truesdell and Sally Ann Truesdell: one brother the Rev. Arthur I. Truesdell, Bernardston, Mass.; two sisters, Mrs. H. R. Harrington, Columbus, Ohio, and Mrs. H. N. Gardner, Tulsa. Okla. Body was removed to the Prentice Funeral Home, 62 Carroll street. The funeral services will be Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at the First Presbyterian church, and burial will follow at Floral Park cemetery.
