He was born John Thorson Aase. He dropped the Aase (the Norwegian farm name). For reasons unknown he never used the proper patronymic, Thorson, and instead used Thompson. His marriage record of 1881 gives his parents' correct names as Thor Iverson and Ingebor (sic) Aase.
