Carl served as a Staff Sergeant on B-24D (#41-11650), 1st Anti-Submarine Squadron, 480th Antisubmarine Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Carl, along with the rest of the crew, was declared "Missing In Action" over the Atlantic Ocean while performing a flight from the US to England via Gander and Prestwick during the war. He was awarded the Air Medal.
