Lois was a farm boy, one of six sons, including his twin brother, Lewis, who went off to war. By all accounts he was a kind and generous young man, newly married, without children. He was killed in an airplane crash while serving in the Philippines. He was awarded a postumous Purple Heart and buried on the island of Leyte. Later, he was disinterred and reburied in the Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines.
