Francis served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on P-40N #42-105276, 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Bergen County, New Jersey prior to the war.

Francis was declared "Missing In Action" when his P-40N was attacked and shot down by Japanese aircraft during the war. He crashed into the sea.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross", Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.

First Lieutenant Francis Henry Armstrong, born 19 Sep 1918, was the son of Francis and Katherine Armstrong of Dumont, Bergen County, New Jersey. Dumont is 18 miles due north of New York City. He left a wife, Jeanette, and son Richard, in Dumont.
In the 1920 census 1-year old Francis is living with his parents, his partner uncle Henry 23, and sister Eleanor 3, at 1116 Hackensack Plank Road in North Bergen, Hudson County, New Jersey. His father and Uncle Henry are firemen for a railroad.In the 1930 census 11-year-old Francis is living with his parents and sister Eleanor 13, at 918 Van Buren Place in North Bergen. His father is an engineer for a railroad. His mother is a saleslady for a dry goods company.In the 1940 census 21-year-old Francis is living with his mother as head of household and sister Eleanor 23, at 163 Prospect Street in Dumont. His mother is a saleswoman for a department store. Sister Eleanor is a private duty registered nurse.Frank married Jeanette V Mercer in 1941.Francis served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot in the 75th Fighter Squadron, 23rd Fighter Group. The NARA WWII casualty listings by state and county for New Jersey show Armstrong, Francis H, 1 Lt from Bergen County as FOD (Finding of Death). A finding of death was determined at least one year and one day after a soldier, sailor, or airman went missing in action. Lt Armstrong’s P-40 was shot down by Japanese aircraft 26 Jun 1944. He crashed in the sea and was not recovered.
