Seaman 2nd Class John Robert Olm, born in 1922, was the son of Otto H and Alice Josephine (McDonough) Olm of Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota.

In the 1925 North Dakota state census 3-year-old John is living with his parents, sisters Dorothy 12, and Kathryn 7, and maternal aunt Ellen McDonough, in Fargo.In the 1930 census 8-year-old John is living with his widowed mother as head of household, siblings Dorothy 17 and Kathryn 12, at 507 Oak Street in Fargo. His mother is a salesperson for a corset company.In the 1940 census 18-year-old John is living with his mother as head of household, siblings Kathryn 22, and James 12, and maternal aunt Ellen McDonough 52, at 54 ½ Broadway, Fargo, Cass County, North Dakota. His mother is an auditor for the AAA (American Automobile Assn). Sister Kathryn is a cashier at the Herbst Department store and John is a delivery boy for a printing shop.In the 1942 Fargo city directory John is listed as living with his mother on Broadway and working as a clerk for Consolidated Freightways.John enlisted in the Navy and was assigned to the Seabees (CB’s Construction Battalion) in October 1942.The Bismarck Tribune – 30 Jul 1943, Fri – FARGO SEABEE DIES IN SOUTH PACIFIC – Fargo, N.D. – Word that John R. Olm, 21, died while serving with the Seabees in the South Pacific area was received Wednesday by his mother, Mrs. Alice Olm, Fargo, from the navy department. No cause of death was given. Seaman Second-Class Olm entered the Navy in October 1942.
