On 9 August 1942 he was placed on board the USS President Jackson as a "wounded survivor from the USS Astoria". The ship sailed from Tulagi, Solomon Islands on the 9th.
According the the muster rolls 17 Aug 1942, when they left Espiritu Santo (Vanuatu) he was still aboard ship, but had died on 9 Aug 1942 of "war wounds". He was buried at sea on the way to Noumea, New Caledonia.
He received the Purple Heart.
