During World War II Manus Island was the sight of an observation post manned by the Australian Imperial Force, who also provided medical treatment to the inhabitants. On 8 April 1942 an Imperial Japanese force overtook the post. In February 1944 the United States and Australian forces launched a six-week campaign to recaptured the facility, which was eventually achieved on 18 May 1944. It was during this campaign that Captain Hubbell was killed in action.
