Wilbur C. Davis Killed on Luzon
Lucy Davis (M) on Snake Ridge
304 N. Spruce St.
Colorado Springs, Colo.

Member of 3rd Sqd. Davis was killed during one of our worst Banzai attacks by the Japs. All night the Japs could be heard singing and yelling while getting drunk on Saki. About 4 am they began crawling towards our line and we tried to stop them with a hand grenade. At about 4:45 AM their leader shot a red flare into the night which was the signal for their mad suicidal rush. They each threw two grenades and yelling screaming at the top of their voices rushed in. Davis dropped 3 Japs in front of his slit trench when the firing pin in his rifle broke and his gun would no longer fire. He must have used his rifle as a club because there was a dead Jap with a cracked skull lying across his left foot. But a second Jap must have bayoneted Davis while he was fighting the first Jap. Davis had 3 bayonet wounds through his chest, any one of which would have been fatal. The attack was over in 10 minutes and we tried our best to save Davis but he died before we could get him out of his slit trench. Next morning we counted 31 dead Japs.
