Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until November 11, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

Sherwood served as a Corporal & Engineer / Gunner on B-25J #43-36036, 823th Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on April 10, 1943 in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the fabrication of metal products and also as Single, without dependents.

On the first day of what would become known as the "Battle of Ormoc Bay" ... B-25J #43-36036, with a crew of six and other B-25s, took off from Pitoe Air Strip, Morotai Island on a strike mission over Ormoc Bay, Leyte Island, Philippines.

They were seen with B-25J #43-28124 making a run on the target. After this run B-25J #43-28124 was not seen again and the entire crew was lost.

B-25J #43-36036, however, came out of the run but crash landed in the Ormoc Bay after being damaged by anti-aircraft fire. Their entire crew was also lost.

Sherwood was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Sherwood also has a "Cenotaph" in the Fairview Cemetery, Northampton, Pennsylvania with his family.
