Lieut. Lyles {sic} Rees Walker Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Walker of 2925 Altura boulevard, was killed in an airplane accident in the Philippines. He was a member of the 2nd Emergency Rescue Squadron.

Second Lt. Lytle R. Walker, Jr., 29, former chief clerk of Southern Pacific offices here, has been killed in an airplane crash in the Philippine Islands, where he served with the Second Emergency Rescue Squadron, his parents, Mr. nd Mrs. Lytle R. Walker, 2925 Altura Avenue, were notified by the War Department Friday.
A navigator, who received his commission a year ago, the El Pasoan was an outstanding basketball player on former teams of Austin High School and the College of Mines.
Winner of seven battle stars, Lieutenant Walker held the Air Medal with one cluster, a presidential citation, the P. I. Liberation ribbon, and other honors of which his parents have been only indefinitely informed. He served in Borneo, China, New Guinea, Luzon, the Western Pacific and the Ryukyus.
Known as the "Snafu Snatchers," the squadron earned fame for rescues of downed airmen in the seas around the Philippines. By August, 1945, the El Pasoan's group had pulled 54 men from waters, both in enemy territory and out.
Besides his parents, Lieutenant Walker is survived by a sister, Mrs. Dick Weaver, 1287 Elm Street, and a six-year-old daughter, Sharon Ann, now residing with Mr. and Mrs. John Richael {sic}, at 3417 Pershing Drive.
The parents said arrangements were being attempted to have the body returned to El Paso for burial in the Memorial Cemetery here.
