William was the son of James & Adeline Scott Sweeney. He was killed in the Battle of the Bulge during WWII.

His father always regretted not having the funds to return his body back home to Iowa after his death.

William never married.

Staff Sergeant William Floyd Sweeney served with the U.S. Army, 377th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division during World War II. He was killed in action on Thursday, November 9, 1944 and interred in Plot J, Row 31, Grave 36 at Lorraine American Cemetery, St. Avold (Moselle), France. Staff Sargent William F. Sweeney was awarded the Purple Heart.
