Memorial Rites Sunday For Sgt. Herbert Gatling
Gatesville. – A memorial service for Sergeant Herbert Morgan Gatling will be held in St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Sunday, November 18, at 4 p. m., conducted by the Rev. John Bonner. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Sergeant Gatling was born in Gates County on June 2, 1921, the son of Mrs. Nell Morgan Gatling, who now lives in Portsmouth, Va., and the late G. C. Gatling. He was graduated from Gates High School in 1938 and attended William and Mary, Norfolk Division. He was an aviation metal smith at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk, Va., for two and a half years prior to his induction in the U. S. Army on September 29, 1943, serving 15 months in the armed forces. He was killed over Regemsburg, Germany, on February 16, 1945. He is survived by his mother and one brother, Staff Sergeant Jack Willey Gatling of the U. S. Army. He came from a prominent family in Gates and was popular among his many relatives and friends.
