Vilas was born to John H. Kroening and Lydia (Retzlaff) Kroening in Fenwood (Town of Wein) in 1911 and died in battle near St Lo France on June 18, 1944. He was married to Elsie Woerple in about 1940 in Janesville, Wi. They had no children Vilas is buried in The US Military cemetary overlooking Omaha Beach in St. Laurent France. (bio by his nephew, G.
